{"id":464,"date":"2009-08-29T08:12:30","date_gmt":"2009-08-29T14:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/japanton.com\/?p=464"},"modified":"2009-08-29T08:12:30","modified_gmt":"2009-08-29T14:12:30","slug":"kata-of-the-bujinkan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/japanton.com\/?p=464","title":{"rendered":"Kata of the Bujinkan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been asked recently to explain the kata of the Bujinkan.\u00a0 Not to explain how to do each kata, but rather how they are to be studied.\u00a0 I will try to give a brief contrast between Bujinkan Kata and Karate Kata\/Chinese Kung Fu forms.<\/p>\n<p>In the Bujinkan arts the form generally consists of few moves.\u00a0 The most involved kata that I have seen to date are around 12 moves at most.\u00a0 In san shin you have as many as 4 distinct moves and as few as 2.<\/p>\n<p>When I compare this to my experience in Karate and Kung Fu, the forms are generally much longer with many parts.\u00a0 When I was learning the forms, I was taught that each sequence, the series of moves before a direction change is another opponent.\u00a0 If this is true; which I have no reason to doubt, one of those sequences is the equivalent of a Bujinkan Kata.<\/p>\n<p>Kata in the Bujinkan are treated like bujkai in karate.\u00a0 Bunkai is when you take a portion of a kata and work it against a live opponent.\u00a0 This allows you to get a feel for the technique and its variations.<\/p>\n<p>The very nature of Bujinkan kata create an issue when it comes to self study.\u00a0 It is difficult to practise a kata which relies on feedback of an opponent by yourself.\u00a0 There is a method to accomplish this.\u00a0 I will discuss visualization in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this clarifies the subject of kata in the Bujinkan if even a little.\u00a0 Your life is on the line, practise well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been asked recently to explain the kata of the Bujinkan.\u00a0 Not to explain how to do each kata, but rather how they are to be studied.\u00a0 I will try to give a brief contrast between Bujinkan Kata and Karate Kata\/Chinese Kung Fu forms.
